His first win on the Association of Tennis Professionals (Association of Tennis Professionals) Tour came at the 2008 United States Open as a qualifier, where he beat Olivier Rochus in five sets. On June 7, 2009, he won his first Association of Tennis Professionals Challenger Tour title with a 6–2, 3–6, 7–5 victory over Carsten Ball in the Sunset Moulding YCRC Challenger final in Yuba City, California, United States. DeHeart played college tennis at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he achieved a #1 Industry Training Authority singles ranking and was a two-time All-American. As a Junior, he won the Industry Training Authority National Intercollegiate Indoor Singles Championship. As a Senior, he was a semifinalist at the Industry Training Authority All-American Championships and won the consolation title at the Industry Training Authority National Indoor Championships.
