Background
Ryogyo was born in Sagami (Kanagawa Prefecture) or Iwanu Province (Shimane Prefecture) in 1251.

During the Bun-ei Era (1264-1274), he became a priest at the Enryakuji Temple on Mountain Hiei and studied esoteric and exoteric Buddhism under Priest Sengyo.
Afterward, he studied the doctrine of the Jodo Sect under Ryochu and became the second head priest of the Komyoji Temple, succeeding Ryochu.
In his late years, he lived at Shirahata in Sagami Province. Because he also lived once at Sakashita Kamakura, his school was also called Sakashita-gi, or Sakashita school.
