In 1883, Sanshiro is a talented though willful youth who wishes to become a judo master by becoming a student at one of the city's martial arts schools. His first attempts to find a suitable instructor fail until he finally finds a school with an accomplished judo master. Initially, Sanshiro is physically capable though he lacks any type of poise or reflection concerning his self-control and demeanor. After a grueling punishment set by his instructor to test his endurance by throwing him into a swamp overnight, Sanshiro begins to recognize the error in his ways and starts to appreciate that there is more to his life and to his art than simple muscle and brawn.

龍之介 月形
Ryunosuke Tsukigata was born on March 18, 1902 in Miyagi, Japan.
After attending the Ebara Middle School briefly, left in 1920 to study acting at the Nikkatsu Kansai Movie Training Institute.
Ryunosuke Tsukigata became a star of chanbara films, but got into trouble when he ran away with Makino's daughter, Teruko Makino, even though he was married. He eventually left Teruko and returned to the fold, but left again to start his own production company, which soon failed. Continuing to work at various studios, Tsukigata appeared in films by such masters as Daisuke Itō, Mansaku Itami, and Hiroshi Inagaki.
He is probably best known to foreign audiences for playing Sanshiro's rival in Akira Kurosawa's Sanshiro Sugata. After World War II, he moved into supporting roles at the Tōei studio, but also played such major characters as Tokugawa Mitsukuni (Mito Kōmon) on film and television.
