Asai Ryuto was born in Awa province in 1842. His early name was Eikichi. Was also called Shisho, Ryuto being his pseudonym.

Asai Ryuto was born in Awa province in 1842. His early name was Eikichi. Was also called Shisho, Ryuto being his pseudonym.
First he studied under the Shijo painter Dodo Hirotoshi, then with the nanga painters Taniguchi Aizan and Nukina Kaioku. Later he went to Nagasaki and worked under Kinoshita Itsuun.
He was also a poet and calligrapher. He specialized in landscapes and kachôga. Famous as a master of Nanga, or the Southern School of Chinese painting, in Kyoto in the early Meiji Era. After studying under Aizan Taniguchi, he studied under Itsuun Kinoshita and Priest Tetsuo in Nagasaki. Also studied landscape painting under Hsu Yu-ting, a Chinese artist.
