Sabunni Tabata was born in 1676 in Amami-Oshima Island, Kagoshima, Japan.
He helped much in improving his home island's agriculture. In 1696, he was made supervisor for sugar cane cultivation for the Satsuma Clan. He improved on the methods of farming, built a dyke to ward off the sea and was responsible for making 494 chobu (750 acres) of land arable.
