Sadakazu Gassan was born in 1838 in Omi, Shiga Prefecture in the family of Tsukamoto Shichirôbei. Originally he was named Yagoro.

He was a student of swordsmith Gassan Sadakichi. After years of training, at the age of 14 Sadakazu is said to have produced his first blade.
In 1869, Gassan Sadakazu forged two special swords for Emperor Meiji. In 1874, he forged one more for dedication to Hiraoka Shrine. In 1885, by Imperial command he gave a display of his art at the Minatogawa Shrine in Kōbe in the presence of the Emperor. One of his swords was presented to the Duke of Connaughi during his tour of Japan.
In 1906, Sadakazu was officially appointed Imperial Court Artist.
He was the son-in-law of Sadakazu and a resident of Osaka.
