He followed the Tokugawa family to Shizuoka after the Restoration of 1868. There, he taught Chinese classics to young men of the clan. Also served in the Shizuoka Prefectural Government. A score of educational institutions were established in the prefecture thanks to his efforts.In 1886, was appointed director of the Shizuoka Prefectural Normal School, then director of the Education Bureau of the prefectural office.
