Sahei Ohashi became an official of the Niigata Prefectural Office (1869) and then chief of the Nagaoka Post Office. Started the Hokuetsu Shimbun (Newspaper) (1880) and the Essa Shimbun (1881). Went to Tokyo (1886) and founded the Hakubunkan, a publishing house which later became a leading magazine publishing company. Also founded the Hakushinsha Publishing Company and the Kyodo Printing Company.
A devout follower of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism, he was an influential figure in Buddhist circles.
