Saikichi Kaneko

Kaneko Saikichi was a navigational surveyor, clever astronomer and mathematician. He is mostly remembered for the murder of an English sailor at Nagasaki on the night of the Tanabata festival (popular festival celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month). It seems the British sailor was unruly and in the ensuing uproar was killed by Saikichi, who immediately afterward committed suicide.
Education
He was sent to Nagasaki to learn Dutch (1853) and later attended the navigation classes that were being conducted by the Dutch at Nagasaki Training School. After passing the course (1865) he was sent on a survey mission to the China coast.
