Originally Saizo Kirigakure was a samurai in the service of Shimotsuke-no-Kami Ashina, he left this position to learn the fine points of Ninjutsu (occult art) from Sandayu Momochi and was able thereby to create illusions which baffled people. Later, his loyalty to his former master made him a bandit, as he needed funds to restore the power of the Ashina family.
