Career
She featured in several B-Westerns in the 1940s. Payne made her film debut in 1936 in the Gene Autry vehicle The Big Show. She became a leading lady in B films, which were usually westerns.
She also played in comedy shorts for Radio-Keith-Orpheum Radio Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
She is most remembered for playing Calamity Jane in Young Bill Hickok (1940). In her later years, she ran her own book store.
Payne died of a stroke at the age of 86.
