Sambe Kanegae

Background

Ethnicity: According to some records, he was a Korean who came to Japan following Hideyoshi Toyotomi's expedition to Korea as a follower of Yasuyori Taku (1597).

Sambe Kanegae was born in 1579.

Career

Sambe Kanegae set up a pottery in Izumiyama, Arita, suitable for making china-ware. His work was so much appreciated that he was given special privileges and an allowance.

Achievements

• To him belongs the credit of popularizing Arita pottery throughout the country.
