Ford was a pastor in Jefferson City in 1844, in St. Louis in 1846, and in Cape Girardeau in 1846-1847. From 1853 to 1860, he was a minister of the East Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1860, he edited the Missouri Baptist and wrote "The Origin of Baptists."
Ford was elected to the provisional Confederate Congress from Kentucky in 1861 where he served on the Committee on Inauguration. He held pastorates in Memphis in 1861 and in Mobile from 1863 to 1865. Ford was loyal to the Confederacy and he stirred his congregations to contribute to the war effort.
After the war, he again held a pastorate in Memphis from 1865 to 1871. He moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he wrote books on ecclesiastical history.
In 1843 Samuel was ordained a Baptist minister.
