Career
In 1830 he was elected to the New Jersey Legislative Council representing Monmouth County. He was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-ninth United States Congress to represent New Jersey"s 2nd congressional district and served from March 4, 1845, until his death near Imlaystown, New Jersey, before the assembling of Congress. He is buried in the East Branch Cemetery, near Imlaystown.
Fort was elected Governor of New Jersey in 1851.
