In the eighty-first year of my age, I write these Verses ;they are the out-come of knowledge, based on experience, and matured by thought: the proceeds of a long life. A few dotted down reflections have grown into aB ook. I bequeath them as a Legacy to my kind with humility, but with faith, hope, trust, and love. May they, by the aid and blessing of God, bear fruit! Since they were written, while they were passing through the press, the partner of my pilgrimage, the participator in all my labours and cares, my companion, friend, counsellor, and wife, during fifty-six years, has been removed from earth and from me, from many friends who dearly loved her, and from a public Jby whom she was largely appreciated since the publication of her first Book (followed by, I think, two hundred and fifty Books )in the far-off year 1828. These verses are hardly less hers than mine. If I have striven in humble, but fervent and prayerful, hope to inculcate rectitude, goodness, love, sympathy, gentle and generous thinking, humanity, patience, virtue, and piety. Faith, Hope, and Charity my work was suggested, encouraged, sustained I will reverently add, inspired by her. This Book, therefore, although written by me, I hope may be regarded as aM onument to herM (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Hall was born on May 9, 1800 in Waterford, Ireland. His London-born father was Robert Hall (1753-10 January 1836), an army officer and, while in Ireland, engaged in working copper mines which ruined him. His mother was Ann Kent (b. 1765, Ottery St. Mary, Devonshire), who supported the family, including 12 children, by running a business in Cork, Ireland. Hall was the fourth son.
In 1821, Hall left Ireland and went to London. He entered law studies at the Inner Temple in 1824, but never practised, though he was finally called to the bar in 1841.
In 1823 Hall became a parliamentary reporter. From 1826 to 1837 he was editor of a great number and variety of public prints, and in 1839 he founded and edited The Art Journal. His exposure of the trade in bogus "Old Masters" earned for this publication a considerable reputation. Hall resigned the editorship in 1880, and was granted a Civil List pension for his long and valuable services to literature and art. He died in London on the 16th of March 1889.
Hall was an Irish journalist, known for his editorship of The Art Journal.

Hall was a convinced spiritualist.
Chairman for the British National Association of Spiritualists (1874)
Hall's wife, Anna Maria Fielding (1800-1881), became well known (publishing as "Mrs S. C. Hall"), for her numerous articles, novels, sketches of Irish life, and plays. Two of the last, The Groves of Blarney and The French Refugee, were produced in London with success. She also wrote a number of children's books, and was practically interested in various London charities, several of which she helped to found.
