Principal of Waukeenah Academy till 1861. Entered the Confederate Army and served in the ranks till close of war. Wounded at battle of Missionary Ridge, 1863.
Remained a prisoner till just before the final surrender. Resumed place in the academy for a few months. Then studied law and was admitted to practice, 1869.
Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Florida F. and Master of Arts 1869-1871. Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Chapter of Florida, 1909. Chairman of the Democratic State Committee of Florida, 1876-1888.
And member of Democratic National Committee, 1880- 1900. Presidential Elector, 1880 and 1908. Member and President of Constitutional Convention in 1885.
Member and Speaker of Florida House of Representatives, 1887. Senator (Democrat), 1887 - 99. Served on Isthmian Canal Commission, 1899-1904.
Delegate to Baptist World Congress in London, 1905. Teacher, Lawyer, Soldier, Senator.
