Samuel Augustus Perry was born in 1787 in Holborn, London.
He was appointed an ensign in the Royal Staff Corps in 1809 and promoted to lieutenant in 1811. In 1819, he was appointed professor of topographical drawing at the Royal Military College, a position he occupied until 1823. He was appointed deputy Surveyor General of New South Wales and arrived in Sydney in August 1829 aboard the Sovereign.

He died 15 January 1854 in Kiama, New South Wales.
Legacy
Perry River (Victoria) was named after Perry by Paweł Edmund Strzelecki (1797–1873) in 1840.
