In 1853, Ryan established the Appleton Crescent in Appleton, Wisconsin and served as its editor and publisher. During the American Civil War, Ryan served with the 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry Regiment with the rank of sergeant. Martha"s sister, Mary, was married to William J. Fisk.
Ryan died of pneumonia on March 26, 1907.
From 1865 to 1873, he was an Outagamie County, Wisconsin judge. In 1895, Ryan was appointed United States. Consul in Saint John"s, Newfoundland.
