Served with Continental Army as chaplain General Arnold’s expedition to Canada, 1775-1776. Ordained to ministry Congregational Church, 1777. Pastor North (now Central) Congregational Church, Newburyport, Massachusetts, 1777-1819.
Known as leader extreme Calvinist group Church.
A founder Massachusetts Missionary Society, 1799, editor its publication Massachusetts Missionary Magazine (established 1803). A founder Massachusetts General Association (a union of conservative, moderate wing Conglists. to combat Unitarianism), 1803, secured endowment for seminary of strict Hopkinsian principles as Andover Theological Seminary, West Newbury, opened 1808 (represented both factions of Conglists.) founder American Board Commissioners for Foreign Missions, 1810.
