Five d. Chairman of Burt, Boulton, and Haywood, Ltd., of London, Paris, Riga, Selzaette (Belgium), and Bilbao. In conjunction with late H. P. Burt established this firm more than fifty years ago. Has been active in promoting the application of scientific methods to chemical and other industries, and has been a contributor to scientific literature in that connection.
Received the Telford Medal of the Institution of Civil Engineers, 1884. Chairman of London Labour Conciliation and Arbitration Board. He was instrumental in its foundation in 18S9, and has, inter alia, presided at settlement of more than 50 cases of labour disputes.
Member of Tariff Commission. In 1898-99 he successfully conducted, on behalf of the London Chamber of Commerce and under the auspices of the British Foreign Office, a series of negotiations with the French Customs Administration with respect to grievances of British importers. A member of the Council of the London Chamber of Commerce.
Vice president, 1893-98. President of the West Ham Chamber of Commerce, 1893-1902. President Federation of Working Men’s Social Clubs.
