Commissioned captain 125th New York Volunteer Regiment, 1862, commissioned 9th Colored Regiment, United States Colored Troops (in this capacity developed interest in the Negro). Brigadier general, 1865. Agent Freedmen’s Bureau, 1866.

Founder Hampton (Virginia) Normal and Industrial Institute for Negroes, 1868.

Achievements

  • The founder and first principal of the normal school which is now Hampton University.
