Sturgis, Samuel Davis was born on June 11, 1822 in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of James and Mary (Brandenburg) Sturgis.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1846.

Career

Joined 2d Dragoons; fought in Mexican War. Served as First lieutenant, 1st Dragoons in West, 1853. Captain with 1st (now 4th) Cavalry, 1855.

Member Utah expedition, 1858. Major, 1861, fought at Wilson’s Creek. Brigadier general United States Volunteers, 1861.

In charge of district of Kansas. Served at 2d Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Antietam. Mustered out of volunteer service, 1865.
