Sturgis, Samuel Davis was born on August 1, 1861 in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Son of Samuel Davis and Jerusha (Wilcox) Sturgis.


Student Washington University, St. Louis. Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1884.


Commissioned Second lieutenant 1st Artillery, June 15, 1884. Promoted through grades to brigadier general, July 1, 1917. Major general N.A., August 24, 1917.

Major general regular army, October 7, 1921. Aide to Brig. and Major General Wesley Merritt, 1891-1896. Assistant adjutant general Department of Pacific and 8th Army Corps, 1898.

Participated in campaign against Manila, P.I., 1898. Adjutant general Department of Pinar del Rio, Cuba, January-May 1899. Assistant adjutant general Philippine Division, 1899-1901.

Member General Staff Corps, 1907-1911. With 3d Field Artillery, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, 1911-1913. Colonel 1st Field Artillery, in Hawaiian Islands, 1913-1916.

Organized 7th Field Artillery at San Antonio, Texas, July 1916. Commanded Camp Funston, Leon Springs, Kansas, until August 24, 1917. Appointed commander 87th Division, N.A., Camp Pike, Little Rock, Arkansas, August 25, 1917.

Arrived in France, September 11, 1918. Detached service, with 1st and 42d divisions in Meuse-Argonne operations, October 4-18, 1918. Commanded 80th Division, November 18, 1918-April 12, 1919.

Commanded Camp Gordon, Atlanta, April 30-July 2, 1919, Camp Pike, July 3-November 10, 1919. Commanded Camp Sherman, O., 1920-1921. Commanded Panama Canal Department, 1921-1924.

Commanded 3d Corps Area, 1924-1925. Retired from active service August, 1925.
