Schindel, Samuel John Bayard was born on June 3, 1871 in Camden, New Jersey, United States. Son of J. P. (captain United States Army) and Martha Pintard (Bayard) Schindel.


Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1893. Army War College, 1908.


Commissioned add. Second lieutenant 3d Artillery, June 12, 1893. Second lieutenant, November 2, 1893. Translations to 16th Infantry, February 25, 1895, to 6th Infantry, April 12, 1895.

First lieutenant 3d Infantry, April 26, 1898. Translations to 6th Infantry, December 19, 1898. Captain, February 2, 1901.

Major, June 12, 1916. Lieutenant colonel, June 30, 1917. Colonel N.A., August 5, 1917.

Brigadier general (temporary), August 8, 1918. With regiment at Fort Thomas, Kentucky, 1895-1898. In Santiago Campaign, 1898, participated in Battle of San Juan Hill and Siege of Santiago.

In Philippines, 1899-1902, and 1905-1906, participating in engagement at Valdes, July 1899, and Bud Dajo, March 4-9, 1906. Attended Swiss autumn maneuvers, 1907. Duty General Staff, 1912 to 1916, June-August 1918.

Assigned to Camp Meade, Maryland., August 26, 1918. Duty General Staff, March-September 1919, later at Fort Leavenworth.
