Samuel Ruiz Garcia, Mexican bishop. Known for his efforts to secure human rights in Central America and Mexico, especcially among indigenous peoples and for his service as a peace mediator between the Indians of Chiapas and the Mexican government. Nominee Nobel Prize, 1995; recipient Martin Ennals award for Human Rights Defenders, 1997, International Simon Bolivar Prize, United Nations Educational, 2000, Niwano Peace Prize, 2002.
Career
Ordained priest Roman Catholic Church, 1949. Named bishop of San Cristobal de las Casas, 1960—1999. Bishop emeritus, since 1999.
President International Secretariat for Solidarity "Oscar Arnulfo Romero". Founder SERAPAZ (Mexican non-governmental organization working for peace in Latin American). Formed National Mediation Commission (CONAI), 1994.
Mediator, 1994—1998; honorary member board directors La Salle University Mexico.
