Honorary George W. Thompson, of Wake Company, September 15, 1875. Left school at 17 to assist widowed mother on plantation. Removed to Durham, North Carolina, 1879, and engaged in grain and provision business, also handling fertilizers.
Organized the Durham Fertilizer Company, 1881, which grew into the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Company, of which is president—the largest company of the kind in the world, with paid-up capital of $46,000,000, manufacturing 1,000,000 tons of fertilizer per year. Also president Southern Cotton Oil Corporation, Charleston (South Carolina.) Mining & Manufacturing Company.
