Studied at London University, 1912-1914.
Lived with Gorkii’s family in Yalta, 1904-1906. Settled at Ekaterinodar (now Krasnodar), 1920, and organized a theatre for children, writing plays and verse which were performed there. Started to publish
children’s verse, 1923.
Soon became a classic in the genre. During the Stalin years, some of his works, such as Mr Twister, 1933, had a propagandizing flavour. During World War II, wrote slogans for war posters.
Also known as an excellent translator of Shakespeare, Bums, Blake, Wordsworth, Keats, Kipling and Milne.
