1904, while in Germany, joined German Social-Democratic movement. Joined Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party and sided with Mensheviks. 1906 returned to Russia, switched to Bolsheviks and worked for Saint St. Petersburg Okrug Party Organisation
From spring 1911 worked for periodical “Zvezda”. 1912-1913 with newspaper “Pravda” and “Priboy” Publ House. 1913 arrested for his connections with an illegal workers’sick fund.
1915 sentenced to 12 months’ fortress arrest for his connections with the “Priboy” Publ House. 1917 worked in Ukraine. Chairman, Nikolayev Party Committee and ed, Nikolayev Party newspaper.
1918-1920 worked for German Communist Party. Then worked for various government and Party publ houses. Editor, newspapers “Proletariy,” “Krasnaya gazeta” and “Leningradskaya pravda”.
Prior to 14th Party Congress sided with “New Opposition” but dissociated himself from it after 15th Party Congress. From 1928 head, Foreign Department, Telegraphic Agency of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. 1930-1931 worked for editorial board, “Malaya Sovetskaya Entsiklopediya” (Small Soviet Encyclopedia).
From 1932 economics admin work. 1935 expelled from Party for alleged anti-Party activities and arrested by State Security organs.
