Returned to Burma in time for pro-democracy demonstrations and decided to enter politics, 1988. Achieved almost instant popularity with the people as the symbol of Burma’s drive for democracy. After constantly criticising the Ne Win regime she was disqualified as a candidate, for having married a foreigner and placed under house arrest, 1989.
