Sandra West Prowell was born on January 1, 1944, in Helena, Montana, United States.
Prowell never even went to high school, but she did get her General Educational Development tests.
Early in her career, Prowell worked as a photographer, radio traffic manager, pet groomer and nurse. She started writing in the 1980s and introduced her first novel By Evil Means in 1993. Among her other books were The Killing of Monday Brown, published in 1994, and When Wallflowers Die, published two more years later. All three books were published in the Phoebe Siegel series from Walker.
In 1989, Prowell co-founded Montana Authors’ Coalition whose main goal is to bring attention to Montana’s professional writers and to Montana’s general contribution to the American Arts.

1994Prowell was a member of Sisters in Crime, Private Eye Writers of America and Mystery Writers of America.
Prowell loved astrology and did charts for many people. She loved animals of all kinds, adopting abused and neglected birds including a half-bald toucan and a red-headed parrot.
Her husband's name was Bruce. The marriage produced a daughter and a son.
