Darié was born in Roman, Neamt, Romania, on April 6, 1908.
Sandú Darié was trained initially as a lawyer, studying at the University of Paris.
Darié was an art historian of various Romanian newspapers and contributed humorous sketches to the French press as well. He had contacts with the Romanian avant-garde, particularly with poet Stephan Roll and his wife, painter Medi W. Dinu, and eventually, decided to devote himself entirely to painting.
The artist immigrated to Cuba in 1941, embracing Cuban life and culture. In 1949 he held his first solo exhibition at the Lyceum in Havana, and later another one in New York. He took part in shows in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Italy, and Japan. Darié's works are uniquely interactive: through his transformable constructions, such as Estructura espacial transformable (1960), the viewers are able to participate in the creative process.
In his compositions, the triangle predominated in combination with vertical and horizontal lines. The painter also used interchangeable mobile panels.
