Background

Bennet, Sanford Fillmore was born on June 21, 1836 in Eden, New York, United States. Son of Robert and Sally (Kent) Bennet.

Education

Attended University of Michigan, 1858-circa 1861. Doctor of Medicine Rush Medical College, Chicago, 1874.

Career

Moved to Illinois with family, 1842. Taught school, Wauconda, Illinois, 1854. In charge of public schools, Richmond, Illinois.

Owner, editor with Frank Leland of Elkhorn (Wisconsin) Independent, circa 1864. Second lieutenant 40th Infantry Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers, 1864. Proprietor drug store, began study medicine after Civil War, Elkhorn.

Wrote songs as hobby, most popular being “The Sweet By and By” (translated into many langs.). Editor, publisher Richmond Gazette. Author: (with J. P. Webster) The Signet Ring (anthology of songs) 1871.
