Born on 7 October 1964 at Solan Himachal Pradesh, He studied at Government Senior Secondary School, Solan,later did Bachelor of Arts from Government College, Sanjauli, Shimla,and Master of Arts from Himachal Pradesh University Shimla.

He was elected President of Block Congress committee Arki in 2009 Indian National Congress. Sanjay Awasthy is Ex-President of Solan Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association. He played so many cricket tournaments including Ranji Trophy in 1989-1990.
Actively involved with student activism having been on the National Student Union Of India.
Thereafter join Himachal Pradesh Indian Youth Congress. He is ExMunicipal Councillor.
He was a good cricketer in his school and college.
