On Monday, March 30 in the year 1220, the day after Easter, in a field outside the town of Hexham in northern England, the body of a young child, Alfred, is discovered, murdered. Lord Godwin, Bailiff of Hexham and in the service of the Archbishop of Canterbury, is summoned to the scene. Alfred has been strangled, but even more shocking are the wounds marking his body: his palms bear puncture wounds as if iron nails had been driven through them, and his left side has been pierced with a knife. Godwin reckons that Alfred died on Good Friday. Why would someone kill a child on Good Friday? And why would his body be marked in imitation of the crucifixion of Christ? Soon a rumor begins to spread that the Jews had murdered young Albert, and a mob seizes all the Jews in Hexham, an extended family of nine. Godwin's first task is to prevent the Jews' murder by the mob, his second to find the person guilty of the horrible murder.

Sara Conway's first novel, Murder on Good Friday, set in thirteenth-century England, is based on actual cases of ritual murder. History reveals that in towns throughout England, charges against Jewish, accused of complicity in the deaths of young Christian boys, were usually dismissed, but a number of those arrested were found guilty and put to death. It was believed by some that a pagan ritual was held every year in which Jewish crucified a Christian boy, causing hysteria, not unlike that seen in connection with the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts. Many of the presumed victims were considered saints or martyrs by other Christians. In the book, the bailiff of Hexham investigates the Good Friday death of a little boy named Alfred, whose palms bear puncture wounds and whose side has been pierced in imitation of the crucifixion of Christ. A mob descends on the nine-member Jewish family that lives in the town, and Godwin must first protect them, then find the actual murderer.
In a second novel, Daughters of Summer, Godwin investigates the poisoning of a wealthy merchant in the summer of 1221.
