Flowers received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Kansas State University in 1974, a Master of Arts in History from the University of California, Berkeley in 1976 and a degree in Library Science from San Jose State University in 1992.
Sarah Flowers has worked in California public libraries for nearly 30 years. She is a member of one of the first Library Journal “Movers and Shakers.” She is the author of numerous articles and reviews for library journals, as well as the author of Young Adults Deserve the Best: YALSA’s Competencies in Action (ALA, 2011), Evaluating Teen Services and Programs (ALA/Neal-Schuman, 2012), and Crash Course in Young Adult Services (Libraries Unlimited, 2017).
Sarah Flowers, Deputy County Librarian of the Santa Clara County Library has announced her retirement effective December 27, 2008. She still continues to write and publish young adult's books.

2000Flowers has been active in ALA (American Library Association) and YALSA (the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of ALA) for many years, and was the 2011-12 President of YALSA.
Sarah Inbody married a computer programmer Philip L. Flowers on September 14, 1975. They have three children Stephen, Mark and Thomas.
