( One of the earliest "New Woman" novels, Ideala (1888) t...)
One of the earliest "New Woman" novels, Ideala (1888) tells the story of a woman who, after making a bad marriage, must decide whether to leave her husband for another man or embrace a feminist philosophy that requires her to sacrifice personal relationships for the good of other women. Told in first-person, by Ideala's friend Lord Dawne, the novel details Ideala's journey to understanding herself and her place in nineteenth-century society. Along the way, we see her writing poetry, providing charity to the poor, falling in love, and travelling to China, all as means to figure out how to live her life in a meaningful way. Author Sarah Grand, best known for The Heavenly Twins (1893), published Ideala with her own money after leaving her unhappy marriage and coming to London to establish herself as a professional writer in the early 1880s. In Ideala, Grand lays out the foundations for the New Woman of the 1890s by showing how one woman processes the legal and economic restrictions women in unhappy marriages faced in the nineteenth century and thinks through how to remedy her own situation. This edition includes an introduction that examines the biographical and historical contexts that influenced Grand's writing, explanatory notes, and an appendix of contemporary reviews of the novel. "For those who have been reading Ideala on microfiche or in crumbling antique editions, Molly Youngkin's new scholarly edition will be a tremendous boon. Given the dearth of in-print editions of New Woman novels by women, Valancourt's Ideala will offer a welcome alternative to those old stand-bys, Gissing's The Odd Women and Hardy's Jude the Obscure." - Anna Jones, University of Central Florida

(First published in 1897, The Beth Book - Being a Study fr...)
First published in 1897, The Beth Book - Being a Study from the Life of Elizabeth Caldwell Maclure, a Woman of Genius, is a semi-autobiographical novel offering a portrait of the artist as a young woman. Grand's compelling story recounts in vivid detail the childhood of her young heroine, Beth, a spirited and intelligent girl who challenges the limitations of provincial life in Ireland and Yorkshire. Without the benefit of an education, Beth must make her own way through adolescence, contending with a violent mother and an alcoholic father. With little money to go round, Beth often goes without so that her brothers might be raised as gentlemen, thus giving her an early introduction to sexual inequality. Even in girlhood Beth challenges gender expectations, dressing as a boy and poaching rabbits for the family dinner table. Like Grand herself, Beth makes an early marriage to escape her unhappy childhood, becoming the wife of philandering doctor, Daniel Maclure. Disillusion soons turns to defiance, as Beth recreates herself as a woman of genius, with her rousing refrain of "I shall succeed!" After escaping to a room of her own, Beth becomes a New Woman, setting a high standard both for herself and for other women. Grand's extraordinary recall of childhood emotions, avoiding Victorian sentimentality, makes The Beth Book a convincing and captivating chronicle of female adolescence. The coming of age and sexual awakening of Beth broadens into a consideration of wider social issues, such as marital violence, vivisection, and the sexual double standard. The Beth Book deserves to become a classic of the Victorian age. This new edition, the first for almost twenty years, includes: * A critical introduction by Jenny Bourne Taylor * Explanatory footnotes * Bibliography * Contemporary reviews * A selection of other writings by and about Sarah Grand

The world is not such a weary place as the dolorous Babs t/1: Impossible. 1. 10 misanthropes would have us suppose. I was just thinking about you." "Indeed!" said Miss Spice. "Yes. But permit me to accompany you back." Miss Spice turned about as on a pivot. "Your way--the way you came--is much sweeter than my way. Now is it not a strange coincidence that we should both have come out for a little stroll this evening? I wanted to see you. I was on my way to call upon you. But how much better this is--to meet here--in the untrammelled open. ' It is an ill wind that--er----blows nowhere. You enjoyed the party?" "Oh yes, indeea'." "And the drive home with that lady, Mrs.--er----" "Mrs. Kingconstance." "Thank-you, yes. I remember now--Mrs. Kingconstance. A widow, is she not?" "Yes, in her own right," said Miss Spice--"I mean----" She did not know what she meant. The path was narrow. The evening was closing in. Mr. jellybond looked about him. There was nobody in sight. "You must be fatigued," he said. "Take my arm." Without waiting for her consent, he drew her hand through his arm in a masterful way, and held it there. Miss Spice nearly swooned. Then she was conscious of a delicious glow. The firm clasp of his large hand stimulated her feeble circulation. She had begun life with a healthy appetite for everything, and had suffered from enforced abstinence, from semi-starvation of...

(Madame Sarah Grand (1854-1943), born Frances Bellenden Cl...)
Madame Sarah Grand (1854-1943), born Frances Bellenden Clarke was a feminist writer active from 1873 to 1922 in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Her work dealt with the New Woman in fiction and in fact, she wrote treatises on the subject of the failure of marriage, and her novels may be considered strongly anti-marriage polemics. For some women, the New Woman movement provided support for women who wanted to work and learn for themselves, and who started to question the idea of marriage and the inequality of women. For other women, especially Sarah Grand, the New Woman movement allowed women to speak out not only about the inequality of women, but about middle- class women's responsibilities to the nation. In The Heavenly Twins (1893) Grand demonstrates the dangers of the moral double standard which overlooked men's promiscuity while punishing women for the same acts. More importantly, however, Grand argues in The Heavenly Twins that in order for the British nation to grow stronger, middle-class women had the responsibility of choosing mates with whom they might produce strong, well-educated children.

Not illustrated. 1901 edition. Excerpt: ...said Mrs. Normanton. " "Indeed, yes," Mr. Jellybond Tinney, whom she addressed, answered absently, with his eyes on Barbara Land. Lady May reared her head at all this. She was superior to any argument but her own. "There is one thing that always gives me pause to ponder in regard to the equality of men and women," Sir Owen said. "In all social relations women compare favourably with men; but in science, art, and literature, men remain supreme. There is no getting beyond the fact of the very few women who have distinguished themselves in those pursuits." "That is true," said Barbara. "At the same time, more women have distinguished themselves than men in a state of subjection. /Esop is the only slave I can think of who distinguished himself in literature. A subjugated race produces no great work of art; why do you expect subjugated sex to produce more than a subjugated race under similar circumstances? So far, woman has been the thrall of law and custom, and she has only been able to indicate the possession of power. But you will see that as soon as women begin to let themselves go in art, so soon as they cease to respect hampering laws and try for the expression of fine ideas, they will succeed." Lady May and Mrs. Japp felt instinctively that the only way to preserve their sense of superiority was to shut their ears to anything that Miss Land had to say. They had talked to each other while she was speaking, and now they arose with one accord, and went off together in a tornado of truisms, leaving Ally Spice, Florence Japp, and Fanny Sturdy to follow together. Mr. Jellybond Tinney went home in a whirl of emotion. Barbara Land had, in a moment, upset every calculation he had...

(Below, and round about, there curved an undulating valley...)
Below, and round about, there curved an undulating valley, a happy, fertile space of wood and water, meadow and arable lands, bounded by gentle eminences, and on the highest, dominating all, an old gray tower. The wild woods climbed to the foot of the tower and there stood sentinel, dark and threatening, as though they guarded a treasure. Lower down the hill was the mansion to which the tower belonged; but because of the giant trees its presence was scarcely to be suspected. It was the tower that commanded attention. On the other side of the valley the smoke betrayed a village, which was also not to be seen because of the sheltering trees. Concealment was the characteristic of the whole neighborhood. It was as if the inhabitants had combined to hide their dwellings. At the first glance it seemed as if the valley were uninhabited ;but a searching eye discovered the gables of some few gentlemens houses nestling among the woods ;not many, though, for the estates of the land-owners thereabouts were all extensive. (Excerpt from The Heavenly Twins, Vol. 1 of 3 From the hi...)
Excerpt from The Heavenly Twins, Vol. 1 of 3 From the high Cathedral tower the solemn assurance floated forth to be a warning, or a promise, according to the mental state of those whose ears it filled; and the mind, familiar with the phrase, continued it involuntarily, carrying the running accompaniment, as well as the words and the melody, on to the end. After the last reverberation of the last stroke of every hour had died away, and just when expectation had been succeeded by the sense of silence, they rang it out by day and night - the bells - and the four winds of heaven by day and night spread it abroad over the great wicked city, and over the fair flat country, by many a tiny township, and peaceful farmstead, and scattered hamlet, on, on, it was said, to the sea - to the sea, which was twenty miles away! But there were many who doubted this, though good men and true, who knew the music well, declared they had heard it, every note distinct, on summer evenings when they sat alone upon the beach and the waves were still; and it sounded then, they said, like the voice of a tenor who sings to himself softly in murmurous monotones. (Excerpt from The Heavenly Twins, Vol. 2 of 3 Edith was m...)
Excerpt from The Heavenly Twins, Vol. 2 of 3 Edith was married in the Cathedral at Morningquest, and of course the twins were present at the wedding. From what social gathering were they ever excluded if they chose to be present? Mrs. Beale had not thought of asking them at all, but Angelica intimated, in her royal way, that she wished to be a bridesmaid, and Diavolo must be a page, and Lady Adeline begged Mrs. Beale for heaven's sake to arrange it so, lest worse should come of it. But the twins did not enjoy the occasion at all, for the truth was that they were not as they had been. Angelica was rapidly outstripping Diavolo, as was inevitable at that age. He was still a boy, but she was verging on womanhood, and already had thoughts which did not appeal to him, and moods which he could not comprehend, the consequence being continual quarrels between them, - those quarrels in which people are hottest and bitterest, not because of their hate, but because of their love for each other. There is such agony in misunderstanding and blame when all has hitherto been comprehension, approval, and sympathy. The shadow of approaching maturity, which would separate them inevitably for the next few years, already touched Angelica perceptibly, and, although to the onlookers they seemed to treat each other as usual, both children felt that there was something wrong, and their discomfort was all the greater because neither of them could account for the change. (The Beth Book By Sarah Grand “How is it people never expe...)
The Beth Book By Sarah Grand “How is it people never expect a girl to do anything?" young Beth Caldwell asks. How, indeed? Beth’s mother is not quite sure what to do with her little genius when Beth spurns her mother's ideals of self-sacrifice and an early marriage, preferring to study piano and all of those around her. Beth eventually marries the local doctor, thinking it might give her independence. But he oversees the Lock Hospital which imprisons prostitutes with venereal diseases. The locals believe Beth is complicit in her husband's acts and snub her, until Beth develops her literary abilities and her own voice. About The Author The Beth Book is similar to the author's own life. Born Frances Clarke, she was expelled from school in 1868 for protesting the Contagious Diseases Act. The author married an Army surgeon but divorced and renamed herself Sarah Grand in 1894. She was a lively literary force and active in women's suffrage societies. The Beth Book was originally published in 1897. Ms Grand died in 1943.

(Excerpt from The Heavenly Twins, Vol. 3 of 3 Half an hou...)
Excerpt from The Heavenly Twins, Vol. 3 of 3 Half an hour after the Tenor parted from Angelica, she was sleeping soundly, not because she was dedolent but because she was exhausted, and when that is the case sleep is the blessed privilege of youth and strength, let what will have preceded it. She lay there in her luxurious bed, with one hand under her head, her thick dark hair - just as the Tenor - had braided it in contrast to the broad white pillow; her smooth face, on which no emotion of any kind had written a line as yet, placid as a little child's ;to all appearance an ideal of innocence and beauty. And while she slept the rain stopped, the misty morning broke, the clouds had cleared away, and the sun shone forth, welcomed by a buzz of insects and chirrup of birds; the uprising of countless summer scents, and the opening of rainbow flowers. It was one of those radiant days, harmonizing best with tranquil or joyous moods, when, if we are disconsolate, nature seems to mock our misery, and callous earth rejoices forgetful of storms, making us wonder with a deeper discontent why we too cannot forget.
