Saulcerīte Viese was born on August 2, 1932 in Jekabpils, Latvia.
In 1955 Saulcerite graduated from the Latvian language and literature department of the Latvian State University, faculty of history and philology.
She worked as a junior researcher at the J. Rainis Museum of Literature and Art History from 1955 to 1958, as a fund custodian from from 1958 to 1973, as a managing editor in the publishing house "Liesma" from 1973 to 1978 and as a deputy consultant in the Union of Writers from 1978 to 1990.
