Career
Very often compared with Norman Wisdom for his parts of funny little working-class fellows in slapstick comedies, adventure films and thrillers. Made 42 feature films during his 15-year career in the Soviet Union. Always a huge box-office success.
Applied to emigrate and lost his job. In 1974, a Moscow film source explained: ‘we can’t afford to let him go because that would mean putting all 42 films on the shelf. Emigrated eventually and settled in the USA. In
the USSR, became a non-person.
The Kino-entsiklopedicheskii Slovar’ published in Moscow in 1986 does not contain an entry for him.
