Savitri L. Bess was born on January 21, 1940 in La Jolla, California, United States. She was a daughter of Douglas L. Bess, businessman and a writer, and Ruth L. Bess, a physical education teacher and businesswoman.
Savitri graduated from the Mills College in 1961 and received B.A. She then studied in the University of Washington and received M.F.A. in 1969. She also received M.Ed. from the University of Arizona in 1985.
Savitri worked as a tapestry weaver from 1969 to 1994.
Meanwhile she has been a yoga and meditation teacher from 1975 to 1989, and has been a counselor using transpersonal psychology from 1985 to 1992.
She was a founder and director of Center for Creative Consciousness in Tucson, Arizona. Savitri also was a resident of Amma Center of New Mexico (Mata Amritanandamayi ashram). In 1995 she began her career as a writer.
