Sawanojo Ogino became famous as a female impersonator when he appeared in the play Yomekagami which was staged at the Hanzaemonza Theater in Kyoto (1691). He became well known also in Edo when he starred in the play Onna Narukami (Goddess of Thunder). He always played opposite Danjuro Ichikawa I.
