Sayohime was born in 560, in Japan.
According to the popular legend she is said to have been turned to stone on Mt. Hirefuru, Hizen (Saga Prefecture) while waving farewell to her husband Sadehiko Otomo, who was sailing to Korea. The origin of this legend is included in Manyoshu, though subsequent versions have been confused with a Chinese legend which originated during the Muromachi Period. This legend has been made into a Noh play and forms the theme of Bakin Takizawa's novel Matsura Kagarni.
