Joined the Royal School of Mines, passing the examination for the Associateship in two years, and obtaining the Murchison Medal in Geology. On return to India entered the service of His (or Her) Highness the Nizam, 1879, rising to the position of Secretary in the departments of Public Works, Railways, and Mines, with a seat on the Board of the Nizam’s Railway. Held post 10 years, and retired, 1901, to settle in England.
Was examiner in Sanskrit in the University of Madras, 1890-1892. Received the title of Shamsul Ulama from the Government of India in recognition of Arabic learning, 1891. Publimtions: Civilisation of the Arabs (translated from the French).
