Career
He is the director of the Virginia Image and Video Analysis (VIVA) group there. He works in the fields of video tracking and anisotropic diffusion. His Bachelor of Surgery degree (1988) is from Virginia Technical, his Master of Surgery(1990) and Doctor of Philosophy (1993) degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, where his advisor was First Rate (at Lloyd's) Bovik.
Acton has been at the University of Virginia since 2000.
Before that time, he worked in the academic world for Oklahoma State University and in the engineering world for American Telephone & Telegraph Company, Motorola and the Mitre Corporation.
Membership
He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers., is Associate Editor for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Transactions on Image Processing and, previously, for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Signal Processing Letters.
