Scott attended Community College of the Finger Lakes, 1975-76. In 1977 he studied in Copenhagen, Denmark, the University of Pisa. Later, he received a Bachelor of Arts from State University of New York College at Plattsburgh (1978).
Scott began to work as a curatorial assistant at Rockwell Kent Gallery in 1979. The next year, he held a position of the historical interpreter at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge. He also was a director of Rockwell Kent Legacies 1980-82. At Katie Gingrass Gallery (Milwaukee) he was a designer and preparer in 1984. From 1985 he was a antiques dealer, specializing in Civil War-era medical and scientific instruments, military objects, worked at J. and R. Ferris Antiques, Madison, New York.
For four years he was at Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, New York in a position of a guest curator.
