Forrest was born in Rutherglen.
He attended Hamilton College, studied sport and exercise science at the University of Strathclyde.
He started playing for Cambuslang at the age of eight years. He represented Scotland at under-19 and under-21 level After the games, he announced his retirement from playing on account of long-term injury.
He took a post as rugby development officer in Inverclyde.
From 2012 he coached the first XV at Cambuslang Reconstruction Finance Corporation, then moved to at Premiership side Ayr Reconstruction Finance Corporation in May 2014. In April 2012 he became the coach for the new Scotland Women sevens squad that were scheduled to compete in a Foreign Investment Review Agency-American Economic Review tournament in Belgium in June 2012.
He is a performance lifestyle adviser at the SportScotland Institute of Sport.
