Genellan - the only refuge for a ship's crew and a detachment of spacer marines, abandoned by a fleet fleeing from alien attackers. Stranded on Genellan, the humans struggled to make a home for themselves until - they hoped against hope - the fleet could rescue them. Lt. Sharl Buccari tried desperately to hold on to the threads of command over both the civilians and the marines - to keep her people together. Winter was coming. No one knew if the winged natives would be friend or foe. And now the bear people were returning, bent on destroying every human - but not before stealing the secret of hyper light drive, the key to interstellar flight...

(Science Fiction Book Club Selection Heart of Genellan Hot...)
Science Fiction Book Club Selection Heart of Genellan Hotshot pilot Sharl Buccari was a living legend. She and her crew of Survivors had established a foothold on Genellan—a beautiful new world, raw and unforgiving—becoming allies with the native cliff dwellers. Now the challenge was to engineer peace with the other advanced race inhabiting the same planetary system—the kones—and to build a colony for the children of humanity, including her own infant son. But konish politics and xenophobia threatened to tear apart the fragile truce for which she had fought so hard. Worse, another mysterious race of aliens who twenty-five years earlier had massacred a human star fleet was back—and on the warpath.

Scott Gier was born on January 13, 1948 in Aiea, Hawaii, United States.
Scott G. Gier graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, where he received a Bachelor of Science. After that he earned a Master of Business Administration at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California.
Scott G. Gier served 6 years in the United States Navy as a pilot and intelligence analyst. After getting out of the Navy in 1975, he worked in the San Francisco Bay Area in laser (Spectra-Physics) and start-up computer manufacturing (GRiD Systems and Silicon Solutions) before switching to web-based and enterprise software support and training. He started writing his series of science fiction novels about Lieutenant Shari Buscari, the tough-as-nails female pilot of a Corvette Space Cruiser, in 1989 during a layoff.
The first novel of the series, "Genellan: Planetfall" (1995), opens with a scene of hostile aliens attacking a human exploration fleet in a foreign planetary system.
Buscari’s ship is damaged and the pilot and her crew are forced to land on Genellan, an Earth-like planet that is home to the nearly humansized, bat-like cliff dwellers who have organized into a hunter-gatherer society.
In "Genellan: In the Shadow of the Moon" (1996), the second book of the series, an older Buscari leads the human colonization of Genellan.
In Gier’s third book, "Genellan: First Victory" (1997), the hostile aliens arrive in vast numbers and with seemingly superior weapons technology. The fourth book of the series, Genellan: Earth Siege, appeared in 2005. Two years later, Daystar was published.
Scott Gier is highly famous as the author of Genellan series. In 1996, Scott Gier was a nominee for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. "Genellan: Planetfall" was selected the Del Rey Books Discovery of the Year in 1996 as well as finishing in ninth place for Locus Magazine's Best First Novel award. "Genellan: Planetfall" and "Genellan: In the Shadow of the Moon" were also both selected as Science Fiction Book Club selections.

Quotations:
"I am a lucky man. Born and pretty much raised in Hawaii, I graduated from the US Naval Academy and became a Naval Aviator. There are no smarter, more genuine, more professional people than those that you will find in the American armed services. I am honored to be a veteran. There are also no better toys than Navy jets, and there are few adrenaline-pumping routines on this planet that can match landing on or taking off from an aircraft carrier. I was also privileged to be a regular watch-standing officer-of-the-deck, underway, on board the USS Hancock, a WWII vintage attack carrier."
"I have always enjoyed hiking and the outdoors and have come to believe that humanity's most important asset (after our respective families) is the Earth beneath our feet. That love of nature and my experiences in the military and high-technology companies define my novels."
