Scott Lax studied at Shagrin Falls High School. In 1976 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hiram College.

Career

Scott Lax was a professional musician. He was an owner and founder of Scott Lax Management, Inc. He was a founder, president and producer of Novel City Pictures, Ltd., feature film production. He has been a recipient of the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference Bernard J. O'Keefe Scholarship in Nonfiction and Sewanee Writers' Conference Walter E. Dakin Fellowship in Fiction. He was presented with a Resolution of Congratulations for his body of work from Cleveland City Council in 2002 and named the 2002 Midwest Filmmaker of the Year by the Cleveland International Film Festival for the feature film version of The Year That Trembled, for which he was source-writer and producer.

A twice-produced playwright, for his two-act stage adaptation of The Year That Trembled, Lax is an award-winning movie producer, short story writer, nonfiction writer, journalist, speechwriter for national figures, and TV writer who has written for ESPN and Comedy Central, and others. Scott also periodically leads workshops and presents at writers' conferences and literary organizations. Scott's also a professional drummer who's played with Bo Diddley, among others. He recently finished a screenplay adaptation of Vengeance Follows.

• Scott Lax is best as the author of The Year That Trembled. He was called "A master wordsmith of the first order" by The Midwest Book Review. His first novel, The Year That Trembled, was called "Powerful" and named as one of 1998's Milestones in Fiction by The Denver Post.

Scott Lax told about what influences on his work: "My work is influenced by Francois Truffaut, the new-wave French filmmaker, who once said, ‘For me, cinema is a prose art. It involves filming beauty but without appearing to or without making a fuss over it.’ Authors Salinger, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Tim O’Brien, Helen Schulman, John Irving, James Baldwin, and Herman Hesse are other influences. As a musician, music influences me: jazz, blues, good rock and roll, classical. I’m influenced by the rhythms and structures of music, and I often try to use them in my work. Spiritual leaders such as the Dali Lama and others influence me on the spiritual side of the scale, while writers such as Henry Miller influence my approach to the erotic side of life and art."
