On January 18, 2006, Thomas resigned as State Senator to become District Attorney. He was appointed to the vacant post on January 24 by Governor Mike Easley to replace West. David McFadyen Junior., who retired early. Thomas was sworn in on January 30.
On February 1, C.W. Bland was appointed to replace Thomas in the State Senate.
He quit this post upon appointment as District Attorney. Thomas is an alumnus of East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina where he earned a Bachelor of Surgery in Political Science and was SGA President. He graduated with a Juris Doctor from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 1992.
Previously, he was a member of the North Carolina State Senate from 2000 to 2005, representing the Second Senatorial district. Before that, he was a one-term member of the North Carolina House of Representatives.
