Wagstaff was born in Maidstone, and attended Bennett Memorial Diocesan School in Tunbridge Wells.

He is a lifelong supporter of Leeds United. Wagstaff joined Charlton at the age of 8 after being spotted at a Charlton Athletic Community course. In January 2008 he was given a 2 1⁄2-year professional contract by Charlton manager Alan Pardew.
He then captained Charlton"s Under 18s on their run to the FA Youth Cup quarter finals.
He made his debut in April 2008 against Barnsley, in the same match as Jonjo Shelvey made his debut. In the same season he was named as the club"s young player of the year.
Wagstaff joined Bournemouth on a month"s loan in August 2008 and to Northwich Victoria for a month in November 2008. Wagstaff scored his first goal for Charlton in a league game against Walsall on 22 August 2009.
He was released by Charlton at the end of the 2012-2013 season.
On 8 July 2013, Wagstaff signed for Bristol City on a three-year deal. Wagstaff made his debut for Bristol City in a 2-2 draw against Bradford City, and scored in that game, to date his only home goal. He went on to score his second goal against Portuguese Vale in a 1-1 draw and scored a wonder goal against Carlisle United which earned him his third of the season.
His fourth goal came against the same side he made his debut for Bristol City and his fifth goal came against Colchester United.
In his second year with Bristol City, he scored his sixth goal against Coventry City and his seventh against Gillingham.
