Balan was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 4th round, 106th overall in the 2000 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He began his pro career in 2002-2003 with the Roanoke Express of the. He played 38 games during the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 seasons with the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League.
Balan also played in the ECHL for the Florence Pride during 2003-2004 and the Greenville Grrrowl during 2004-2005.
He was tied for second among Greenville defencemen with +10 rating. He was a +5 on January 28, 2005 in a game against the Texas Wildcatters.
From 2005-2009, he played for the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL. He is ranked second among Condors defencemen with career high 26 assists and 29 points. He had five points, 2 goals and 3 assists in 14 playoff games.
